In August Ray Dixon was brought before the American
Consular Court in Shanghai. Her counsel, Mr. Lorrin Andrews, obtained continuances on the ground of illness.
Before trial and through deception of the Italian consul,
she married an Italian. Her counsel was censured by the
Court and the case dismissed.
In October Trixy Laprieto, a well known free lance in
the prostitution and Marbling business here and further
north, was also brought before the American Consular Court
in Shanghai. Her counsel, Mr. Stirling Fessenden, entered
a defense of nationality on the basis of French papers.
Although these papers appeared not to be in order, the
Court went on to require the prosecution to prove American
nationality. Evidence of common reputation was introduced
but held insufficient, and the accused was discharged.
It is reported that the success of the Laprieto de-
fange has brought here again as many as forty old and new
"girls" who would otherwise have feared to come. This dif-
-ficulty in prosecution appears, however, not insurmount-
able. Laprieto has herself feared to go to the French Con-
sular Court and has been tried in a civil case of fraud in
the Mixed Court.
As a permanent result of these prosecutions there
have since been no reputed American bawdy house keepers in
China and it is believed there are none actually of that
nationality.
Some persons insist that there are as many
"girls" here now as there used to be. This statement may
have a measure of fact in it, but it is on the whole untrue.
The shameless publicity of prostitution, as seen here late
in 1906, is jne.
It is not likely to reappear for some
time, since there is no less rigor of administration on the
Dart of the principal foreign consulates here than there is
on the part of the American authorities. Of course the
Municipal Council is the local authority which has most closely to deal with this evil, through its system of licencess and through the police. In view of the exten-
